Homeschool Laws in Michigan

Is it legal to homeschool in Michigan?

Is Michigan easy to homeschool in?

* EASY *

According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), Michigan is considered relatively easy to homeschool in. The state offers two legal options for homeschooling: homeschooling under the homeschool statute and homeschooling as a nonpublic school.

Under the homeschool statute, parents are required to provide an organized educational program covering specific subjects, such as reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar. However, there is no requirement for parents to notify local authorities or the government about their homeschooling activities, and the law specifically allows parents to give home instruction. If a nonparent is significantly involved in the teaching, HSLDA offers guidance for its members.

For those opting to homeschool as a nonpublic school, additional requirements include ensuring that the instructor has the necessary qualifications, such as a teaching certificate, permit, or a bachelor's degree. Parents with religious objections to teacher certification are exempt from these requirements if they are the instructors. Additionally, annual notification to the local public school superintendent is required, providing details such as the names and ages of enrolled children and the qualifications of teachers. Specific subjects must be taught at all grade levels, including additional subjects like the US Constitution and Michigan's government structure at the high school level.

Overall, while there are certain subject requirements and reporting duties for those choosing the nonpublic school option, Michigan's homeschooling laws are generally straightforward and offer flexibility, especially under the homeschool statute.
