Help your students build an excellent foundation for a variety of writing styles in this history-based writing class.

Teaching your kids to be excellent writers doesn't have to be a battle! In our IEW writing class, even the most reluctant writer will discover tools and techniques that will make writing easier and even fun. The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum helps students build a wide variety of structural and stylistic writing skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. In this class, students will learn how to make keyword outlines, write from notes, retell narrative stories, summarize single and multiple references, write creative stories from pictures, write inventive stories, write formal essays, and formulate formal critiques of literature. Students will be introduced to structural and stylistic techniques in class and will then utilize these techniques to complete writing assignments at home.

While the curriculum we will use is written for 6-8 grades, mature students as young as 4th grade will also benefit from this class with additional parent support at home. Many 4th and 5th graders have successfully completed this curriculum. If you're unsure whether or not this class is right for your student, feel free to reach out to the instructor.

If you wish to register a student who will be younger than 4th grade this fall, please speak to the instructor first, as the material will likely be quite challenging for students younger than 9 years old.

Duration 50 minutes 2 - 12 week semesters on Fridays / pay by the semester
